Well, I’m no fashion expert and very rarely does anyone ask for my opinion on such matters. But the question of what to wear for mediation does sometimes present itself, with clients often nervously saying ‘I wasn’t sure what to wear’.
Given that mediators are completely impartial, what someone wears to mediation is of little consequence to us. We certainly won’t be making judgements of any kind – much less judgements on fashion sense!
However, I do understand the need to be prepared. I also understand what we wear can massively affect our confidence levels. Being under dressed or over dressed can send people into an anxious spiral, causing them to lose focus on what really matters at mediation.
Mediation is not court – dress comfortably
Mediation is a professional process and on some levels it is important to dress as such. No pyjamas please! However, mediation can also be a long process. Whether it’s family mediation, workplace mediation or civil mediation, it can take place of the course of several hours or even a whole day so it’s important to dress comfortably.
Remember- mediation isn’t court. The mediators are not going to make decisions about your future, so there is no need to dress uncomfortably in an attempt to impress the mediator.
What to wear as a Mediator?
When I first became a mediator and gave up my career in law, I promised myself I would never wear a suit for work ever again and for the most part I haven’t. But when I teach and train mediators, the question of what to wear as a mediator often arises. It’s important for us to project a professional image to instil confidence in the process and our abilities to resolve the issues.
Summary: Be comfortable, don’t overthink it!
Ultimately, what people wear for mediation is of little consequence and will probably have no real bearing on the outcome. Get comfortable and don’t over think it!
If you are still unsure how the mediation process works for either family mediation, civil mediation or workplace mediation cases, please do not hesitate to give us a call to discuss your queries further.
