Practical support through separation and divorce.
Facing separation or divorce? Divorce coaching can help you regain clarity, confidence and control.
Facing separation or divorce?
Divorce coaching can help you regain clarity, confidence and control.
Separation and divorce can be emotionally and practically overwhelming. You may be facing difficult decisions about your relationship, finances, your home, your children and your future – often while trying to manage conflict and communicate with your former partner.
You don’t have to navigate all of this on your own.
At Crowther Mediation, our divorce coaching service provides confidential, practical and individual support for people going through separation, divorce and life after relationship breakdown.
Our divorce coach, Louise Neilson, helps clients understand what they are dealing with, identify their priorities and develop practical strategies to move forward.
How can divorce coaching help?
Divorce coaching is about helping you make your own decisions with greater clarity, confidence and control.
Divorce coaching is different from both legal advice and counselling. It is a practical, forward-focused service designed to help you navigate the challenges that arise during separation and divorce.
Divorce coaching can help you:
- Understand what you need to deal with and where to start
- Feel less overwhelmed by the separation process
- Make important decisions with greater clarity
- Prepare for difficult conversations with your former partner
- Manage communication and reduce unnecessary conflict
- Prepare for meetings with your solicitor
- Make the most of your legal advice
- Prepare for family mediation
- Identify your priorities and what you want to achieve
- Develop boundaries with your former partner
- Manage difficult or high-conflict relationships
- Navigate co-parenting after separation
- Prepare for conversations about your children
- Build confidence and emotional resilience
- Develop a practical plan for the next stage of your life
Your coach won’t tell you what decisions to make. Instead, they will help you understand your options, identify what matters to you and work out the steps that are right for your circumstances.
What is Divorce Coaching?
Divorce coaching is a confidential one-to-one service designed to support you through the practical and emotional challenges of separation and divorce.
It sits alongside other professional services you may need during divorce.
- Your solicitor provides legal advice.
- Your mediator provides an impartial environment in which you and your former partner can work towards agreements.
- Your divorce coach supports you individually, helping you prepare, plan, communicate and manage the personal challenges of the process.
- This means divorce coaching can be particularly valuable if you feel that you need someone in your corner who understands the challenges of relationship breakdown but is not involved in making decisions for you.
Divorce coaching before separation
You don’t have to wait until you are formally separated to seek divorce coaching.
Perhaps you are considering whether your relationship can continue. Perhaps you have decided that you want to separate but don’t know how to begin.
You may be worried about:
- How to tell your partner that you want to separate
- What separation will mean for your children
- Where you will live
- Financial uncertainty
- How your partner might react
- Whether you should speak to a solicitor
- Whether mediation could work for you
- How you will manage emotionally
Talking these issues through with a divorce coach can help you organise your thoughts and consider your next steps before making important decisions.
Divorce coaching during separation and divorce
Once a relationship has ended, the practical demands can feel relentless.
There may be decisions to make about your home, finances, children and future, while at the same time dealing with the emotional impact of the relationship ending.
Divorce coaching provides a confidential space where you can step back from the immediate pressure and focus on what you need to do next.
Your coaching sessions can help you:
- Clarify – understand what is happening and identify the issues that matter most to you.
- Prepare – get ready for conversations, solicitor meetings, mediation and important decisions.
- Plan – develop practical strategies and manageable next steps.
- Communicate – find ways of communicating more effectively, particularly where conversations with your former partner are difficult.
- Move forward – begin to build a positive and realistic vision for life after divorce.
Support with a high-conflict divorce
Some separations are more difficult than others.
Where communication has broken down, or where your former partner is behaving in a controlling, manipulative or highly conflictual way, it can be particularly difficult to know how to respond.
Divorce coaching can provide practical support in navigating these situations.
Your coach can help you consider:
- How to establish appropriate boundaries
- How to communicate more effectively
- How to respond rather than react
- How to keep difficult conversations focused
- How to manage emotionally charged communication
- How to prepare for difficult interactions
- How to protect your time and emotional energy
- How to keep your focus on what you can control
Where there are concerns about domestic abuse, coercive control or your personal safety, specialist legal and safeguarding support may also be appropriate. Divorce coaching does not replace specialist domestic abuse services or legal advice.
Divorce coaching and co-parenting
For many separating parents, the end of the relationship does not mean the end of their relationship with their former partner.
Instead, you need to find a way to continue parenting together.
That can be challenging, particularly where communication is difficult or there is ongoing conflict.
Divorce coaching can help you develop a more constructive approach to co-parenting, including:
- Managing difficult conversations
- Establishing boundaries
- Keeping communication focused on the children
- Dealing with emotionally charged situations
- Preparing for discussions about child arrangements
- Managing disagreements
- Developing healthier communication patterns
- Reducing the impact of parental conflict on your children
The aim is not to create a perfect relationship with your former partner. It is to help you develop a workable approach to your new relationship as co-parents.
Divorce Coaching and Family Mediation
Divorce coaching and family mediation can work particularly well together, but they are different services.
Family mediation is an impartial process in which a trained mediator helps separating couples discuss and resolve issues such as finances, property and arrangements for their children.
Divorce coaching is individual support for one person.
A divorce coach can help you prepare for mediation by helping you identify:
- What is most important to you
- What you need to resolve
- What questions you need to ask
- Where you may be willing to compromise
- What you want to achieve from mediation
- How you want to approach difficult conversations
Coaching can also continue alongside or after mediation, particularly where you need support implementing new arrangements or adjusting to life after separation.
At Crowther Mediation, we can help you understand which service – or combination of services – may be appropriate for your circumstances.
Do I need a divorce coach if I have a solicitor?
A solicitor and a divorce coach provide very different types of support.
Your solicitor’s role is to provide legal advice and advise you on your legal rights and options.
Your divorce coach’s role is to provide personal and practical support.
For example, your coach can help you prepare for a solicitor appointment by identifying the questions you need answered and helping you organise the issues you want to discuss.
This can help you feel more prepared and make your legal appointments more focused.
Divorce coaching does not replace legal advice. We recommend obtaining independent legal advice where appropriate.
Who can benefit from divorce coaching?
Divorce coaching may be helpful if you are:
- Considering separation
- Newly separated
- Going through divorce
- Struggling to communicate with your former partner
- Experiencing a high level of conflict
- Finding co-parenting difficult
- Preparing for family mediation
- Feeling overwhelmed by the decisions you need to make
- Unsure what your next step should be
- Struggling to move forward after the end of your relationship
- Looking for practical support and someone to help you stay focused
You don’t need to have a particular problem or be at a particular stage of divorce.
Sometimes, having an experienced person outside your immediate family and friendship circle to talk things through with can make a significant difference.
